Crib sheets that actually fit: 52 by 28 and why it matters

Crib sheet sizing looks trivial and is the one part of nursery bedding where fit genuinely matters. A sheet that pops off a corner is exactly the loose bedding that safe-sleep guidance is about.

The standard size

A full-size US crib mattress measures approximately 52 inches by 28 inches, and fitted sheets are cut for it. Mini cribs, portable cribs, bassinets and travel cots are all different, and their sheets are not interchangeable with a standard one.

Measure your own mattress before ordering. It takes a minute and it is the only way to be certain.

Depth is the second number

Mattress thickness varies, commonly between four and six inches. A sheet with a shallow pocket on a thick mattress will be under tension and will ride off the corners; a deep pocket on a thin mattress leaves slack that gathers.

The tug test

With the sheet on, grip the corner and pull upward and inward with a firm hand. If it comes off, it does not fit — no matter how it looks when smoothed down. Do this on all four corners; mattresses and sheets are not always square.

Repeat after the first few washes, because cotton shrinks and elastic relaxes.

What never to do

Do not fold a sheet under, do not add a towel or a mattress topper to take up slack, and do not use pegs, clips or elastic straps that were not sold with the mattress. Every safe-sleep authority is consistent that nothing extra goes under or over a sleeping baby.

If the sheet does not fit, the answer is a different sheet.

Fabric and how it behaves

Cotton jersey is soft and stretchy and forgiving of small size differences; woven cotton and muslin are cooler and hold their shape better; microfibre is cheap and warm and less breathable. Silk is smooth and needs gentle washing.

All are fine when they fit. The listing states which fabric a sheet is, because that determines how it washes as much as how it feels.

Shrinkage

Cotton shrinks, usually most in the first wash. Good sheets are cut oversized to allow for it, which is why a brand-new sheet can feel slightly loose before its first wash and correct afterwards.

Wash before first use, on the temperature you intend to keep using, so the size settles.

How many you need

Three is the practical number: one on, one in the wash, one in the cupboard. Two works until the first bad night. Multi-packs exist for this reason rather than as an upsell.

Keep the spare somewhere you can find it in the dark — that is when you will need it.

Buying with confidence

Mini cribs, bassinets and travel cots

Three sizes get confused with the standard crib and none of them share sheets with it. Mini cribs are commonly around 38 by 24 inches, bassinets vary widely by model, and travel cots are usually a different shape again with a thin mattress that a deep-pocket sheet will not grip.

Buy sheets for the specific product rather than by category name, and if the manufacturer sells its own, that is usually the safest route. Where they do not, measure the mattress and compare against the flat dimensions on our listings.

What to do if a sheet stops gripping

Elastic relaxes with washing and heat, and a sheet that gripped when new can fail the tug test a year later. That is the point to retire it, not to work around it.

The workarounds people reach for — pegging, tucking, sheet straps — either add something to the crib or leave the sheet under tension that will release. Neither is acceptable on a sleep surface. A retired crib sheet makes an excellent changing-mat cover, so nothing is wasted by replacing it.
